The Apokoronas

Discover Kefalas and the Apokoronas

Kefalas, Vamos & surrounding area

Kefalas has two tavernas (including pizza) and a whole host of kafeneions. There are also two mini markets - all within easy walking distance. On your way into the village, you will pass the Kefalas cheese factory where you can purchase fresh yogurt and cheese.

You will see plenty of wild flowers. Around Kefalas you can expect to see the usual array of wild flowers, including orchids. You can also expect to see fields of electric blue lupins, white chamomile and pink tulips. Wild almond bushes flower throughout spring. Being quite rural, you can also expect to see a variety of birds.

Flowers start to appear in September, and reach a peak in around April / May. Throughout this time, the place is lush green, with a constant succession of different flowers

The nearby village of Vamos offers further choice. Again, numerous kafeneions, tavernas, and pizzerias. There is also a coffee shop with delicious cakes, a gyros bar, a bakery, bank, pharmacy and the Vamos Health Centre.

Other villages close by include Gavalachori. Xerosterni, Litsarda, Likotinara and Palailoni, Drapanos and Kalamitsi. Vryses is very traditional inland working town that is well worth a visit.

Almyrida, Kalyves and Georgiopoli are the nearest tourist beaches - all about 15-20 minutes by car. Another gem, not far from Kefalas, is Ombrosgialos. There are few (if any) facilities here, depending on the time of the year, but the setting is spectacular and it's perfect for snorkelling.

The Venetian towns of Chania and Rhythmenon are both about 30 minutes by car, or you could go by bus.

Beaches, Swimming & Snorkelling

Ombrosgialos

The closest swimming (& snorkelling) place to the house, is at Ombrosgialos (Octopus bay) on the way to Drapanos. Turn off just after the village of Palailoni, and follow the road down for about 6 km. It is a winding road, but quite safe. There is no beach here, so you'll be jumping in off the rocks & concrete platforms. There are no life guards here, so please take care and do not swim if the sea is choppy. facilities are limited, with a fish taverna where you can get food and something to drink.

Almyrida

An excellent beach for lolling in the water, and shallow for quite some way. It gets very busy in the summer months, with lots of places to eat.

Between Almyrida & Kalyves, is Kera beach, with limited facilities

Kalyves

Kalyves has a couple of beaches: The main beach is as you come into the village from Almyrida / Vamos. There is also Kiani akti (towards the Souda end of Kalives), and Kalami, a bit further in the same direction

Georgiopoli

Georgiopoli is famous for its sandy beaches, but in the town itself, it can be quite touristy. As you make your way towards Rethymno, you will find a number of beach bars, all offering the usual facilities and food, and importantly, life guards. The miles of sandy beaches can be very tempting, but every year, tourists die because they get caught out by the currents, so please refrain from swimming here.
